Closing Bell: Tech Giveth, Tech Taketh Away (DDS, FFIV, FDO, HPQ, MS, PLXS, WEN)

Another day of tech concerns took the markets lower during earnings season. Consumer confidence was higher and jobless claims were lower and the dollar was trying to show some strength. Still, housing data was mixed and inflation was picking up in the Philadelphia Fed report this morning. The biggest issue today is that many of these stocks were just up too much ahead of earnings. Despite the caution, the DJIA and S&P500 were close to and even above the red-line for part of the day.

Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow Jones 11,822.80 -2.49 (-0.02%)
S&P 500 1,280.26 -1.66 (-0.13%)
Nasdaq 2,704.29 -21.07 (-0.77%)

Wendy's/Arby's Group May Sell Arby's

It appears that Wendy's/Arby's (WEN) is about to have a roast beef sale. The company announced this morning that it is considering selling the struggling Arby's chain in order to focus more on the Wendy's hamburger chain.

Both sides of the company's eateries, Wendy's and Arby's, have seen sales slump, but Arby's has had the most problems thanks mainly to sandwiches that can cost more than five bucks. With such a price tag , those sandwiches weren't selling wel in the current economic atmosphere.

Wendy's/Arby's Group Sinks After Q3 Loss

Wendy's/Arby's Group (WEN) was wallowing in red ink Friday morning, after the fast-food firm confessed to a third-quarter loss and warned that its full-year earnings would arrive at the low end of its previously forecast range. Even more troubling, the restaurateur said it's not yet prepared to offer financial guidance for 2011.

For the recently concluded quarter, Wendy's swallowed a net loss of $900,000 -- which translates to a negligible per-share deficit -- down from its year-ago profit of $14.69 million, or 3 cents per share. Revenue for the period slipped 4.7% to $861.2 million. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters were anticipating a profit of 4 cents per share on $882.6 million in revenue.

Yum! Brands Boosts Dividend, but Is It Time to Buy Shares?

Yum! Brands logoYum! Brands (YUM), a restaurant entity whose multiple concepts compete with McDonald's (MCD) and Wendy's/Arby's Group (WEN), gave shareholders some great news this week: their dividend is going up! According to the press release, the quarterly payment is now 19% higher, coming in at 25 cents per share.

Not bad at all. Looks like management is feeling good about future cash flows. As we all know, dividend increases can be indicative of fundamental fiscal strength. And I like it when a dividend is backed by a strong portfolio that is well-recognized by consumers. Establishments like KFC and Taco Bell are strong trademarks.

Wendy's/Arby's Group Reports Lousy Earnings

wendy's earningsWendy's/Arby's Group (WEN) issued its second-quarter earnings on Thursday. The fast-food entity beat expectations. But, as far as I'm concerned, it wasn't any big deal. In fact, the market sort of agreed with me. By the end of the trading session, shares were off by a mere penny, settling out at a price of $4.14. Volume wasn't that interesting, either.

According to Briefing.com, net profit of 6 cents per share went beyond the estimate by a penny. However, same-store sales at both the Wendy's and Arby's declined. System-wide comps in North America contracted 1.7% for the former and 7.4% for the latter.

McDonald's Receives Bearish Reaction to Latest Earnings

McDonald's Corporation (MCD) was down roughly 2% as I began composing this piece during the afternoon session. I hope investors weren't paying attention to the bears who were in control of the fast-food giant's shares. To me, the stock seems to be in good shape, and in the kind of trading climate we're in, it could be a useful instrument for the cautious player.

I'm seeing a quote of around $70 go by on my screen. Not bad in the least, considering that the 52-week high is $71.84. It shows the kind of resilience the stock possesses. Indeed, considering how many equities have pulled back from their 52-week highs, you've got to enjoy this element of the story.

Yum! Brands Didn't Excite Wall Street with Q2 Numbers

Poor Yum! Brands (YUM). The company has some high-profile trademarks in its portfolio, and it competes vigorously with Burger King (BKC), McDonald's (MCD), and Wendy's/Arby's Group (WEN). It's a competent player in its field. Sometimes, though, that just isn't enough. Tuesday, during the after-hours action, the stock was sold off, losing over 3% of its value.

And this was after the owner of KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell beat earnings expectations in the second quarter. It's a funny thing, though: You can top estimates all you want, but if your guidance isn't so hot, your stock isn't guaranteed to respond in the positive direction.

Closing Bell: A Curve Ball Day (BP, RMBS, TIVO, TGT, TLAB, WEN)

Today's gains were wiped out in the afternoon after the weakening Euro again spooked investors. The Fed's Beige Book also was 'steady as she goes' but did contain the note that inventory investing from companies was declining, and that showed some added concern that businesses weren't as optimistic as some may have hoped. The real closing bell was yet another day where the verdict of an up-day or down-day was not certain until the very end.

Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow 9,899.25 -40.73 (-0.41%)
S&P 500 1,055.65 -6.35 (-0.60%)
Nasdaq 2,158.85 -11.72 (-0.54%)

Wendy's/Arby's Group: Avoid After Q1?

I'm not a fan of Wendy's/Arby's Group (WEN). It just doesn't seem as safe as stocks like Burger King (BKC), McDonald's (MCD), or Yum! Brands (YUM). Of course, I'm certain I did nothing more than state the obvious.

As a low-priced equity, Wendy's/Arby's Group always possesses the risk of volatility. Today, the shares are off by over 3% in afternoon trading; at the time of this writing, I saw a share price of $4.93. Hey, it's better than the day low of $4.86. The company had reported earnings results for the first quarter Thursday morning. Do the numbers make the company look more or less attractive?

Can Burger King's 'Brunch' Menu Take Bite out of McDonalds?

Burger King (BKC) is turning up the heat in its war with McDonalds (MCD) for early morning sales. In selected markets, Burger King is advertising the availability of a "Burger King brunch" in a quest to cash in on lucrative morning sales. This is only a few months after announcing Burger King will carry coffee made by Starbucks to provide a more flavorful alternative to its BK Joe coffee.

This is what the fast-food breakfast wars have become: Mimosas at the drive-thru window.

Add Yum! Brands to Your Portfolio?

Yum Brands earningsYum! Brands (YUM), owner of KFC and Taco Bell, operates in the same industry as McDonald's (MCD), Burger King (BKC), and Wendy's/Arby's Group (WEN). All of these stocks are either at or near their respective 52-week highs. How does Yum! Brands look after its first-quarter report?

You've got to take notice of this stock. The one-year chart depicts an equity that consolidated for a while, only to finally break out and head to the upside. And here's some more good news for both traders and investors alike: Wednesday, the shares closed the regular session 1.8% higher from where they started. Then, during the after-hours session, following distribution of the earnings release, the bulls, deciding they wanted to remain in charge, gave the company another boost.

Back on Fast-Food Menus: Roller Skates

Rollerskates: they give a new meaning to "getting a burger to go," doesn't they?

Carhops on roller skates are making a comeback as Sonic (SONC) forges ahead with plans to revive wheeled waitstaff at its drive in restaurants across the U.S. Sonic is planning a new TV ad campaign that will highlight this nostalgic feature of Sonic stores that many diners may have forgotten -- or that younger customers didn't even know existed -- in an effort to reconnect with consumers.

Can Value Menu Turn Around Arby's?

Though it's a bit later than fast-food rivals McDonald's (MCD) and Burger King (BKC), Arby's is at last rolling out a value menu of its own. The restaurant is adding more lower-priced items to its menu including a small roast beef sandwich, curly fries and a "jamocha" shake -- and operator Wendy's/Arby's Group (WEN) is backing them with an expensive new advertising campaign.

It's part of a big push by the higher priced fast-food joint to woo back cost-conscious customers who fled the pricier restaurant for cheaper rivals during the recession. Since Arby's ownership group Triarc bought the Wendy's name in 2008, it has seen its Arby's stores stuck in a steady downward spiral -- sped up by the recession.

But will this latest gambit help, or is Arby's a dying chain?
