Marker Close: Another Listless Trading Day (BAC, NVDA, TXN, AMD, BIDU, YHOO)

The market went up and then down. By the end of the trading day, most of the indexes were in the red, but not by much. The two pieces of news that traders had to digest both came early in the day. The National Association of Realtors said existing home sales rose 7.6% to a seasonally adjusted rate of 4.13 million. Housing market progress is still painfully slow. Weekly jobless claims, a notoriously fickle number, rose 12,000 to 465,000. A better indication of the job market -- continuing claims -- fell 48,000 to 4.49 million. The figure is still staggeringly large and a sign the the joblessness problem remains firmly entrenched.

The numbers:

Dow Jones 10,662.42 -76.89 (-0.72%)
S&P 500 1,124.83 -9.45 (-0.83%)
Nasdaq 2,327.08 -7.47 (-0.32%)

Closing Bell: Materials Lead Market Higher (IBM, TXN, MTG, MNKD, RSH, SCCO)

Stocks initially had a hard time finding real direction today. Stocks started out weak with top-line revenue concerns but then rallied with materials. Even Canada's raising its overnight interest rates did not materialize any "rate hike fears" for the immediate horizon.

Dow 10,229.96 +75.53 (0.74%)
S&P 500 1,083.48 +12.23 (1.14%)

Texas Instruments Posts Growth in Q2: Is It Enough for the Market?

Texas Instruments (TXN) reported earnings Monday after the bell. Shares were punished in after-hours trading, falling over 5%. The market was disappointed, I presume, by the fact that there really wasn't too much of a surprise when it came to the bottom line.

The tech company announced earnings per share of 62 cents in the second quarter. Okay, that might have been simply in-line with expectations, as our earnings preview makes clear. But you've got to take note of the year-over-year growth as well.

Intel Scores Big in Q2 -- Buy the Stock?

Intel (INTC), whose related companies include Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Texas Instruments (TXN), did extremely well during the second quarter. You've got to like the stock at this point. It reacted very nicely in Tuesday's after-hours session following the release of the report, shooting higher by 7%.

The market has been crazy lately, but as Trey Thoelcke highlighted in his preview piece, Intel's stock is currently cheap relative to the industry average.
