Media Content Delivery Becomes Largest Value Driver for Akamai

Akamai is a content delivery company that delivers web content for its customers besides offering additional value added services like advertising solutions and site acceleration. It competes with other players like InterNAP Network Services, Limelight Networks and Level 3 in this business and delivers close to 20% of global web traffic. Our price estimate for Akamai stands at $37.11, which is about 23% below the current market price.

The company recently released its Q4 2010 earnings, and we have increased our price estimate to $37.11 based on continued fast growth in revenues across all verticals. Our new estimates value the media content delivery segment as the most valuable for Akamai. We previously had e-commerce as the most valuable segment, but the rebound in media revenues has impressed us leading us to change our forecasts and the way we view this business.

Closing Bell: Dow Punches Through 12,000 Again (BSET, NFLX, CRUS, MMI, MUR)

The DJIA poked its nose well above 12,000 this morning and may indeed close above that mark when today's session ends. There was a bit of encouraging housing news to offset a weak unemployment number, but stocks were more interesting to traders today than either oil or commodities. Crude oil traded off by about -$1.70 and closed below $86/barrel. Gold also fell today, to below $1,320.

Here are the numbers for late afternoon trading today:

Dow Jones: 11,989.83 +4.39 (0.04%)
S&P 500: 1,299.54 +2.91 (0.22%)
Nasdaq: 2,755.28 +15.78 (0.58%)

With Netflix Above $200 a Share, a Great Time to Buy Puts

Netflix (NFLX)Netflix's (NFLX) very strong bottom line Q4 numbers were accompanied by revenues that were a little light: $595.92, million compared to Street estimates of $597.49 million.

But they were also accompanied by better than expected subscriber growth. In Q4 the company reeled in 3.1 million new subscribers and expects to end the first quarter of 2011 with between 21.9 million and 22.8 million U.S. subscribers.

The company sees EPS of $0.90 to $1.13 on revenues of $684 million to $704 million in Q1. This compares to analysts' EPS consensus of $0.87 to $675.7 million.

Netflix Earnings Impress, but Is the Stock a Buy?

Get a load of this price action. Netflix (NFLX) finished Wednesday's session down 2% to $183.03. Volume was significantly above average. The 52-week high for the DVD-rental entity is $209.24 (as of this writing), so that represents something of a pullback for the shares.

Then, during the after-hours trading period and following the release of the fourth-quarter report, the stock shot higher by 10.4% to $202.10. It was back above the $200 level in no time. Netflix is nothing if not a fascinating equity to watch. I do a lot of wishing while watching this company: I wish that I had purchased the company either at the 52-week low of $48.56, or at least somewhere much lower than where the price currently resides.

Amazon Buys LoveFilm, the 'Netflix of Europe'

One of the top growth companies over the past couple years has been Netflix (NFLX). The company has effectively transitioned from its DVD delivery business to streaming. However, the competition is heating up, and it is getting more expensive to license content.

Actually, one of the biggest competitive threats is Amazon.com (AMZN). Thursday the company announced that it has purchased LoveFilm, which is an online video rental service that's based in Europe.

Coinstar's Big Drop: Buy or Ignore It?

Coinstar logoCoinstar (CSTR) fell dramatically during Thurday's after-hours session. You had to feel bad for the company's shareholders. Imagine, a big drop for the owner of the great, media-game-changing Redbox?

Yep, it's true. Shares of the company, which counts Netflix (NFLX) as a colleague, lost over 24% to land at $43.05 after closing the regular session down slightly to $56.95. The 52-week high for the stock is $67.56 while the 52-week low is $25.37. Sure, $43.05 may not be as ugly as $25.37, but it's still ugly, my fellow investors.

Serious Money: Netflix and Tulips

The Tulip mania in Holland went on for seven years, supporting John Maynard Keynes commentary that "the market can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent." This is one of my favorite stock market quotes, so forgive me if I repeat it too often. Although, I'm not sure that is possible when I watch Netflix, Inc. (NFLX) stock price continue to soar.

The stock was up almost 5% yesterday, on a down day, closing at $187.88, with a P/E of 70.90 -- that's 71 years times earnings folks!

Is that sensible? Investors are saying who cares? And the analysts are supporting them. The fact that analysts have a horrible track record and that the stock is highly speculative has become irrelevant.

Netflix Gains Ground on Cramer Recommendation

Netflix (NFLX) logoShares of Netflix (NFLX) started Tuesday on a high note, with the shares gaining more than 1% out of the gate. Traders appear to be responding to new comments from Jim Cramer, after the host of CNBC's Mad Money offered an upbeat opinion on the stock Monday.

Specifically, Cramer is enthusiastic about Netflix's push into streaming content, and he has high expectations for future subscriber growth. The analyst also argued that the stock's valuation is actually quite reasonable, when measured against the company's long-term growth rate. For traders looking to take part in continued gains by NFLX, Cramer suggested in-the-money call options.
