Is Holiday Shopping Changing? Walmart and Target Think So

toy shoppingI was reading a rather interesting article in The Wall Street Journal (subscription required) about the potential for a holiday toy war between Target (TGT) and Walmart (WMT). The price war centers on toys because "parents will buy stuff for their kids even when the economy is awful."

The article adds that shoppers have attempted to buy the "biggest toy bargains" while "ignor[ing] stores' other offerings." However, the article is quick to point out improving economic conditions suggest that retailers have a reason to believe the shoppers will look around the store a bit more and be quicker to part with some cash. Is this a safe assumption? Yes, I think that it is. However, I have a couple of reservations.

Trading volume is brisk and share price is up, just hours ahead of today's Q3 earnings release expected from eBay (EBAY). The earnings call is scheduled for just after today's close, with company guidance suggesting a result of 37 cents per share on revenue of $2.18 billion. Focus Media (FMCN): Advertising Gains in China

Focus Media (FMCN) logo"Focus Media Holdings (FMCN), our latest featured stock, is a leader in the advertising sector in in China; this stock is a great way to play the broad consumer market in China as that country's middle class continues to grow," says Paul Goodwin.

The editor of Cabot China & Emerging Markets Report explains, "In 2002, the company's founder, Jason Jiang, was standing in a crowd of bored office workers in Shanghai, waiting for one of the office block's infamously slow elevators to arrive.

"Then it hit him. If he could just put a little fl‚at-panel TV on the wall by the elevators, he could sell space on the screen to advertisers, translating all those increasingly affluent eyes into money.

Gap's New Logo Is a Failure, Kind of Like the Stock

new Gap logo (GPS)Fashion firm Gap (GPS) has had its fair share of struggles recently -- what with the economic crisis and all, not many people want to dish out a lot of money for khakis and tight sweaters. In recent months, Gap has seen sales cool and reported that same-store sales dropped 4% during the second quarter.

So, what do you do with the holiday shopping season approaching and sales slumping? Do you drop prices across the board to try and attract more shoppers? Do you advertise these new prices so cash-strapped college kids know they can now get their khakis and button-ups cheaper? No. The brand geniuses over at the Gap decide this is time to replace the companies iconic blue box logo with something a bit more modern.

McDonald's Happy Meals Might Become Less Happy

A situation rapidly taking shape on the West Coast may signal coming product changes for McDonald's Corp. (MCD). Investors however, appear to be rallying behind the perennial favorite, with shares of McDonald's trading up almost 1.25% as of this writing.

The issue stems from health concerns that are being voiced by local governments in California and possibly elsewhere. The assertion is that McDonald's Happy Meals, which are marketed towards children by the use of free toy giveaways, contain unacceptably high levels of sugars, sodium, and fats. Local politicians are forwarding the proposition that they shall ban McDonald's use of toys as a marketing tool if the company doesn't change the Happy Meal offering.

iAd logoApple, Inc. (AAPL) only entered the mobile advertising market a few months ago, but the company has already been successful at taking away crucial mobile advertising revenue from giants such as Yahoo! Inc. (YHOO) and Google, Inc. (GOOG).

Apple was definitely a late comer to the mobile advertising party, but it has nonetheless made a quick impact. According to a report from Bloomberg Businessweek today, Apple could end the year with a nice 21% share of the market.

Budweiser Says, 'Drink Up, It's Free'

Anheuser Busch's (BUD) Budweiser brand's sales have fallen 9% last year. This is as close to a marketshare disaster as you can get.

Budweiser is trying to sharpen its image to focus on the younger crowd. It plans to kick off a new campaign on September 29. Budweiser has dubbed that day, "Budweiser National Happy Hour." On that day Budweiser will offer free beer to those over age 21. The samples will range from 6 to 12 ounces depending on state and local laws.

Disney Must Get Its Movie-Marketing House in Order

Disney (DIS) management has decided to hire a new marketing person to sell Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, a movie that will hit theaters in May 2011, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This move should make Disney shareholders at least a little concerned. Apparently, the current marketing chief, M.T Carney, may not have all that it takes to maximize the financial potential of the assumed blockbuster.

The movie division over at the Mouse is extremely important to the company's ability to create value. It's also going to play a big role over the next year in terms of stock performance.

AT&T Jumps into the Mobile Location Biz

AT&T logoOne of the hottest categories in tech is location-based services (LBS). Essentially, this means using your smartphone's GPS capability to show friends your current location. One of the early leaders in the space is Foursquare, which recently snagged a large amount of venture capital. But other players are diving in. For example, Shopkick recently rolled out a pilot of its LBS platform to allow shoppers at Best Buy (BBY) to get discounts. And of course, Facebook recently launched its Places capability.

In fact, now AT&T (T) is getting into the game. The telecom giant has teamed up with an LBS startup, SCVNGR, which has a rewards system for the iPhone and Android. It will be in 50 AT&T stores throughout the Midwest as a trial program.

JockStocks: The Secret to Nike's Success

I remember six years ago when the Beastie Boys released their newest album. It dealt with New York City and what it meant to the group -- hence the title, "To the 5 Boroughs." It seems that athletic shoe and apparel giant Nike (NKE) also will attempt to capitalize on the pride generated in each of the city's five boroughs, as it will release a limited edition line of shoes celebrating each of the boroughs.

These shoes will only be sold in New York, with select stores in each borough receiving the corresponding shoe. These shoes were produced for the inaugural World Basketball Festival that will take place from August 12 through August 15. The selected stores in Brooklyn will receive shoes with a black, plum, and white color scheme; a logo for the borough; and laces that identify the shoes as the Brooklyn edition.
