Heinz (
HNZ) is not just a maker of ketchup. It's also a company that can deliver for its shareholders. Today, the stock isn't up that much; with a little over an hour to go before the market closes its doors for the day, it was higher by about 0.7%, with a price of $44.57, not too far away from the 52-week high of $47.84. Volume, however, is healthy, as is the
one-year chart (save for the little rough bit on the right, which anyone would expect to see considering what's been going on in the major indexes as of late).
The company did a cool thing this morning. Besides reporting a nice set of data for its fiscal
fourth quarter, management raised the dividend. Music to the ears of those who count this equity as a portfolio member.

Here are some highlights from this past week's earnings coverage on BloggingStocks:

- Cablevision Systems Corp. (CVC) said Q1 revenue grew, but disappointing earnings dragged down shares.
- Chevron Corp. (CVX) had strong Q1 earnings and boosted its dividend, but Gulf spill concerns weighed on shares.
- CVS Caremark Corp. (CVS) Q1 earnings topped consensus estimates but it also said same-store sales slipped.
- Freddie Mac (FRE) said its lost $8 billion in Q1, less than a year ago, and requested further bailout funds.

Kraft Foods Inc. (
KFT) reported first-quarter numbers on Thursday. Judging by the market's reaction today, Wall Street is behind them. Wall Street might be behind them for a very specific reason: when it comes to defensive stocks, Kraft is right up there with dividend-paying companies such as The Coca-Cola Company (
KO) and The Procter & Gamble Company (
PG).
I'll tell you, the current price action is pretty cool right now. With about 90 minutes to go before the closing bell (which is the time I'm writing this), shares of the food manufacturer are up $1.06, or 3.6%, to $30.27. Volume is strong. The 52-week high on the stock is $31.09.

U.S. stock futures rose on Friday, indicating a strong start on Wall Street a day after one of the most volatile sessions on the markets. While much uncertainty remained as the Greece debt situation continues to unfold, employment data provided further support to the positive movement.
Wall Street is still trying to recover from Thursday, when a possible simple human error caused a massive sell-off which saw the Dow industrials down nearly 1,000 point within half an hour. As U.S. markets pared losses and finished the day down "only" over 3%, many questions remained.

I'm going to take a quick look at two companies that released earnings on Thursday. First up is Eastman Kodak (EK), but I'll tell you this: EK was anything but up. The stock closed off 16.9% by the end of the session. Volume was exceptionally high. But does this mean Kodak is a buy or a sell?
Back in January, Kodak rallied on its Q4 numbers; at that time, analysts and their projections were destroyed by the strong report. I, however, remained bearish on the company because of its turnaround status, preferring to focus on the risk of the situation instead of the forward-looking potential.

Hershey (HSY) stock rallied after the company released first-quarter earnings Thursday. By the end of the session, the stock had climbed over 7% to close at $48.08. A new high was reached at one point: $48.23. As can be seen, the market is solidly behind the famous confectioner and its quarterly report.
The top line increased just under 14%. The bottom line, on a GAAP basis, came in at 64 cents per share, nearly 100% better than the 33 cents per share earned in the year-ago period. On an adjusted basis, net income growth was 68% because of some charges added back to that 33-cent profit stat. This was, nevertheless, a great performance: The analysts were only expecting somewhere around 47 cents per share.

To those taking time off for Good Friday: "May the Force Be with You!" To those working half days, enjoy your time with your families. The U.S. stock markets are closed today and that might be best so that we all can take a breather.
Given that stock markets all around the world were up yesterday, including ours -- again ... April Fool's Day! -- even day traders expressed confidence because they obviously were willing to hold stocks knowing the long weekend left plenty of time for unforeseen bad news to to slam their positions.

ConAgra Foods (CAG), a company that produces packaged edibles for supermarkets and whose colleagues include Campbell Soup (CPB) and Kraft (KFT), didn't have the kind of quarter you look at and say, "Way to go, management!" It was a boring, steady kind of reporting period.
For the fiscal third quarter, total sales were kind of flat, down a minuscule 0.9%. Earnings from continuing operations on an adjusted basis rose 10% to 44 cents per diluted share. Compared to estimates, that 44-cent stat came in as expected, nothing more, nothing less.

General Mills (GIS), whose colleagues at the food markets include Kellogg (K), Kraft Foods (KFT), and Campbell Soup (CPB), performed well in the fiscal third quarter. On an adjusted basis, net income increased 23% to 97 cents per diluted share. This beat estimates by four pennies.
General Mills was able to expand the gross margin by keeping an eye on efficiency opportunities and optimizing the overall quality of the inventory mix. Of course, there was a little luck involved, too, as commodity costs weren't as expensive as they previously had been. It's always good when that happens.

This afternoon, I'm going to take a look at earnings releases from two companies in the food industry. One is a maker of a very famous ketchup product, and the other is instrumental in supplying consumers with the tools they need to put together a delicious peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich.
Let's start with the company responsible for the crimson condiment. H.J. Heinz Company (HNZ) delivered one heck of a report. The summary (of continuing operations), proudly trumpeted at the top of the Q3 release, is indicative of a business hitting on many, if not all, cylinders. Sales grew nearly 13%. Emerging markets were robust. Earnings came in at 83 cents per share, which was 9% higher than the comparable period's bottom line.
