Veolia Environement (VE): A European Bargain

The contributing editor to Personal Finance explains, "Once such top European bargain is water and waste-management firm Veolia Environement (VE).

"Europe accounted for three-quarters of Veolia's revenues in 2009, with France accounting for roughly half that total. But the company's main business lines have relatively light exposure to economic cyclicality and may benefit from European austerity.

NextEra Energy (NEE): A 'Bargain' in Utilities

"Our latest "Bargain Stock of the Month" feature is NextEra Energy (NEE), which changed its name in June from the FPL Group," notes Vita Nelson, who notes that the company changed its name to "better reflect the company's scale as one of the largest and cleanest energy providers in the nation."

The editor of MoneyPaper's Direct Investing exlains, "Its regulated utility, Florida Power & Light, provides electricity to 4.4 million customers. Its unregulated unit sells power across the United States.

First Trust ISE-Reserve Natural Gas (FCG): 30 Picks in One

"The biggest opportunity for energy investors today is natural gas. And investors can buy 30 natural gas stocks with one ETF: the First Trust ISE-Reserve Natural Gas ETF (FCG)," says Ian Wyatt.

The editor of The 100K Portfolio explains, "There are many reasons for businesses, consumers, investors and politicians to be bullish on this commodity. Natural gas seemingly has everything we could want from an energy source - it's cheap, clean, and there is an abundance of it throughout our country.

"For this very reason, ExxonMobil, the world's largest energy company, is acquiring one of the leading natural gas companies in the country - XTO Energy.

The $41 billion acquisition will make ExxonMobil the single biggest producer of natural gas, solidifying the company's commanding position in the energy sector. Smart investors should follow Exxon's lead and look to gain exposure to natural gas today.

Hotel Chains to Cut Back on Housekeeping

We've all seen those gently worded, politically correct suggestions in our hotel rooms - "____ gallons of water are used each day cleaning towels and sheets that have been used just once..." While guests are invited to re-use sheets or towels in the name of environmental friendliness, the conservation serves another purpose -- lowering housekeeping costs.

With occupancy rates on the decline, hotel chains are looking for ways to limit expenses, and one of these ways is by reducing housekeeping efforts. Some Wyhndham Worldwide (WYN) chains, such as Howard Johnson, Ramada, and Super 8, leave linens unchanged whenever possible. WYN's Days Inn chain is soon going to adopt a three-day change rule (I'm assuming all hotels still change between guests, regardless of the length of stay).

Clean Harbors (CLH): Cleaning Up in the Gulf?

"The clean up from the BP oil spill will be involved, costly and very long; one company involved is Clean Harbors (CLH), which is the market share leader in hazardous waste services and a leader in overall environmental remediation," says Brendan Coffey, a specialist in "green" investing.

The editor of Cabot Green Investor explains, "Given the scope of the Deepwater Horizon well disaster and the established reputation of Clean Harbors, we suspect the company will benefit for months if not years to come.

"Clean Harbors is a well-run company that was founded by current CEO Alan Kim in 1980 as a four-man outfit dedicated to cleaning out oil tanks. Last month, the company sent a phalanx of employees to begin cleanup efforts in the Gulf.

Five Reasons to Buy Trina Solar

Trinasolar TSL logoTrina Solar (TSL) has had a rough couple of years. After a $10 IPO in 2006, it flew up to peak at $35 in 2007 only to bottom out under $4 at the end of 2008. It was partially the broader market that held back Trina, but also speculation over the viability of solar power as oil prices softened.

Trina Solar nearly became a bear market statistic. But the company has fought back from less than $3 a share to its current $25 price, and there are a lot of reasons to think that Trina Solar is making a comeback. In fact, it's one of my favorite small-cap stocks to buy this earnings season -- and here are five reasons why:

Resource Expert Powers Up Geothermal Plays

"Most resources are depleting assets; they are no good once consumed. However, there are sources of renewal energy, and this area has been gaining attention because of environmental and global warming concerns, as well as fear about impending oil shortages," says Adrian Day.

The editor of The Global Stock Analyst explains, "Geothermal is truly environment-friendly (that is, it has a small footprint, has no residual waste, and is not a blight on the landscape), and unlike most green power, it is profitable."

Ormat (ORA): Powered Up over Geothermal

Geothermal energy isn't a new concept in the United States; it's actually been around for some time, with numerous geothermal power plants in California, Nevada and a few other western states," says David Fessler.

The contributing editor to Money Morning explains, "There are new plants on the drawing board, too. Unfortunately, the recession has stifled the construction progress on many of them. But all that's about to change.

"Thanks to a few key technological developments -- and a big cash infusion from the government -- the stars are aligning to produce the perfect storm for this super-green energy source.
