Earnings season has kicked off and Wall Street has decided to ignore the bad jobs numbers from this morning in favor of quantitative easing coming from Ben Bernanke and friends at the Fed. Today we also finally broke 11,000 on the DJIA and are within about 3% of a year high now.
Here were today's closing bell levels:

I last discussed aluminum company Alcoa (AA) back in July. At that time, its price was roughly around the $11 mark. Thursday, the stock closed the regular session at $12.20. During the extended-hours trading that followed, the stock rose 2.8% to $12.54 in reaction to the release of the third-quarter report. The 52-week low for the shares is $9.81, so they're comfortably above that level. It's time for long-term investors and short-term participants to decide how the stock looks now that the numbers are out.
Let's first go to the one-year chart. Such a graphic doesn't make things easy, does it? The overall pullback makes the stock appear weak, but I nevertheless see an equity that wants to clear some more resistance levels if only the rest of the market will help it out.

Calls were the options of choice on Alcoa (AA) Thursday, according to data from the International Securities Exchange (ISE). During the course of the session, speculators on the ISE bought to open 1,255 calls on AA, compared to just 56 puts. The equity's single-day ISE call/put volume ratio of 22.41 underscores a distinct preference toward bullish bets over bearish.

Today was one of those days where the news was tied to more hope and a decent start to earnings season than over any great breaking global news. A barely-decent 10-Year Treasury auction was not showing anything rotten, and it seems that the corporate credit markets are starting to open back up. News on deficits being another $1 trillion held nothing back for stock gains. Can you believe it, six straight days of gains in stocks? Cramer coming back after a holiday and saying that the bottom of the market has been seen for the year may have also gotten some comfort back in the game from retail investors.

S&P 500 1,095.28 +16.53 (1.53%)

It's been a tough year for aluminum. The spot price of so-called "primary aluminum" (99.7% purity) has fallen over -12% year to date, but that's nothing when compared to the decline in the world's largest aluminum manufacturer Alcoa Inc.
(AA). The Dow Jones component's shares are down over -32% year to date, a decline that's a clear reflection of fears of another leg downward in the global economy.
But investors should remember the old adage "buy low, sell high" when it comes to Alcoa. AA stock may have had a rough run lately, but there are signs pointing to a turnaround in the company soon. Here are three reasons why investors should consider Alcoa stock for their portfolios.

Today was a strange day in the market, with EU markets mixed and an overall mixed bias being present all day ahead of earnings season. A Fed official noted that rates were appropriate on the same day that Ben Bernanke was out discussing the lack of credit available at small businesses. Despite today's win looking more like a tie or surrender, we have now been up 5 days in a row.
Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:
Dow 10,216.27 +18.24 (0.18%)
S&P 500 1,078.75 +0.79 (0.07%)

Alcoa (
AA -
option chain) stock is trading lower today after the company looks like it has missed a deadline for a new labor deal. for the second time today.
AA announced earlier today that it had extended the deadline to negotiate a new labor deal with the United Steelworkers Union, its largest union covering 5,400 employees at 10 plants. The union's contract was to expire at 1 AM this morning, but was extended 11 hours until noon and just before noon,
the company announced a tentative agreement. No terms have been released and the union still needs to ratify it as well. If you think this stock won't be rising too far in the coming months, then it could be a good time to look at a bearish hedged play on AA.
This morning, AA opened at $11.43. So far today the stock has hit a high of $11.68 and a low of $11.35. As of 12:15, AA is trading at $11.45, down $0.19 (-1.6%). The chart for AA looks bullish and
S&P gives AA a positive 4 STARS (out of 5) buy ranking.
