Now that the Google-YouTube media circus has died down a bit, what does MTV (Viacom) think of the partnership between the world's largest Internet search service and the world's largest social video-sharing website? Well, as many may know, Google distributes MTV video clips over its AdSense advertising network as the result of a deal between Viacom Inc. (NYSE: VIA, VIA.B) and Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) back in August of this year.So far, Google has been very quiet on exactly how it was going to monetize YouTube, which is one of the nagging negatives that thousands have been vocal on recently. With Google's penchant for making swells of money on search engine advertising but not on much else, it'll have to craft innovative solutions again to make money from YouTube's video viewing. I'm not sure that just pasting AdSense into the YouTube network will cut it for growing ad revenue, but who knows. That's in addition to fierce copyright battles Google may now face from owning YouTube.
Can the existing partnership between MTV Networks and Google give a glimpse into what the possibilities for a Google-YouTube advertising model might look like? Perhaps, because it does work and going in an alternate route of forcing YouTube customers to watch advertising before watching YouTube content would most likely be a disaster. So the innovative engine at Google will have to get creative with this one for sure -- monetizing YouTube won't be an easy, slam-dunk trick.
