So, who is "greener," Google or Microsoft? Since most of the talk about these companies revolves around product launches and fierce old-school, new-school competition, it's interesting that this Cnet article talks about which company is more friendly towards the environment.
As Kermit the Frog has famously stated, "it ain't easy bein' green" -- and nothing could better describe both Google's and Microsoft's efforts to reduce energy consumption and waste. It would probably strike fear in the heart of any environmentalist to see Google's massive global data centers in operation. It's hard to imagine many small cities using as much electricity as Google does.
A good quote from this Cnet article references these areas of being green: Subsidies for buying Priuses? Check. Solar panels? Check. Hormone-free chicken in the corporate cafeteria? Check. Between them, they're doing a variety of things to try to make the Sierra Club, organic farmers and Al Gore proud.
So, who is greener? Looks like a stalemate to me -- but both companies stand as shining examples of what making an environmental impact is all about. If you're an investor in either company, vote with your shares. These two competitors are doing it right.
